Overview

The album was recorded at Harry J. Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, and Island Records' Basing Street Studios in London, with production handled by the Wailers themselves, in collaboration with Chris Blackwell and Carl Perrins. The album's sound was shaped by the Wailers' experiences growing up in Jamaica, as well as their exposure to American rock and soul music. Aston Barrett's bass lines and Carlton Barrett's drumming provided the foundation for the band's sound. Lee Perry's innovative recording techniques added a unique texture to the Wailers' sound. The album's themes of social justice and equality were influenced by the Wailers' experiences with poverty and oppression in Jamaica. The album's influence can be heard in the music of numerous artists, including The Police and U2.
