Jimmy Garrison collaborated with numerous notable jazz musicians, including Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and Art Blakey. His career spanned over two decades. Garrison taught at Wesleyan University. His music has been preserved in the National Jazz Archives. Garrison's innovative approach to the double bass was characterized by his use of extended techniques, such as multiphonics and overtones. Garrison's influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary jazz musicians, including Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper.
